I have an analytical and scientific mindset, so I want to do as thorough an investigation of your health as I possibly can, and this is often where lab tests come into play.
Whether you’re dealing with the symptoms of perimenopause, or any other health issue, each person is unique, so I’m here to work with you to determine what the best course of action is, and what kind of lab tests you may need, depending on your situation.
In doing so, I utilize a variety of lab assessments, including the kind of regular lab work that a conventional MD would run, but we can also go even deeper with more specific lab tests, including saliva, urine, hormone, and neurotransmitter testing.
Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL)
Common lab tests can be ordered, such as complete blood count (CBC), cholesterol, blood sugar assessments, including fasting insulin tests, as well as celiac screening, and testing for thyroid hormones and antibodies, iron, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and hormone testing.
IgG Food Sensitivity Testing
Food sensitivities can cause many common reactions, including things like migraines, eczema, bloating, indigestion, fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), weight gain, or difficulty losing weight.
This comprehensive assessment tests for an IgG antibody response to over 100 common foods by doing a blood sample. You can find more information here.
Urine (Dutch Test) or Saliva Hormone Testing
Much of what can be learned from a hormonal assessment comes from looking at the menses cycle and female hormonal symptoms.
However, sometimes urine or saliva hormone tests can offer excellent information on where hormone levels are in the body.
These kinds of tests are particularly good at determining if hormones are having an effect on things like PMS, fibrocystic breasts, weight gain, depression, acne, insomnia, hair growth or loss, infertility, uterine fibroids, male andropause, and even perimenopause symptoms, like hot flashes.

Adrenocortex Stress Profile Testing
I’ve worked extensively with people who are suffering from high levels of stress and dealing with its effects on their bodies.
But did you know that stress, and other symptoms, like anxiety, fatigue, depression, light-headedness, dizziness, inability to manage stress, insomnia, low energy, low libido, blood sugar imbalances, nausea, decreased focus or concentration, and memory issues are often signs that the adrenal glands need support?
With that in mind, in order to assess adrenal function, we’ll use either the Dutch test with hormone testing or a saliva test to look at how your cortisol levels fluctuate throughout the day by testing in the morning, noon, evening, and prior to bedtime.

Neurotransmitter Testing
After helping so many patients with things like anxiety, depression, and ADHD, including those who are also struggling with perimenopause symptoms, I’ve found neurotransmitter testing is a great way to identify effective supplement programs based on specific neurotransmitter imbalances.
Unfortunately, there aren’t many labs that do this kind of testing, so I work with a lab in the U.S. to get these tests done.
These tests can be customized to look at specific neurotransmitters, including but not limited to serotonin, dopamine, GABA, epinephrine, and norepinephrine.
If you want to learn about neurotransmitter testing, you can find more information here.
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) Testing
The issue of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is becoming much more well known as a possible cause of digestive problems, including conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), heartburn/acid reflux, peptic ulcers, bloating, gas, and food sensitivities.
With that in mind, I’ve put together an extensive naturopathic program, including diet and supplements, to help treat SIBO, pending the results of this testing.
Not all digestive symptoms need this kind of extensive testing, and many can be diagnosed by looking at your symptoms alone, but this testing may offer more detailed information on what kinds of treatments will be best.
